Advanced Training
Rigging and Foreman Training PRograms
We offer two programs for additional workforce development. These programs are available at no additional cost to union contractors.

Foreman Training program
Long-standing foremen are reaching retirement age and experienced replacements for these team leaders are often unavailable. In order to maintain efficiency and continued growth, companies must develop their workforce. The Foreman Training Program through SDTTF does not cost union contractors any additional fees. By utilizing our program, the challenge of developing an effective training program is placed on us, not the contractors. We collaborate with participating contractors and use company-specific curriculum to ensure that program participants have the most accurate and useful training possible.
The Foreman Training Program is designed to equip foremen with the skills and knowledge needed to lead effectively on the jobsite. This program is ideal for contractors looking to enhance their workforce’s leadership capabilities.
Foreman Level I is a 20-hour course that can be completed in two days. This course is designed for new foremen or individuals who are being considered for advancement to foreman. Part of this course involves an evaluation of the participants strengths and weaknesses. This information is reported back to the individual and the contractor.
Foreman Level II is a 20-hour course that can be completed in two days. It is designed for individuals who already have experience being a foreman but need development in Procore and communication skills. Utilizing construction materials provided by our contractors, we are able to integrate those documents to Procore.

Rigging Training Program
When it comes to rigging, there’s no shortcut to quality. Proper training ensures cost-saving efficiency at the worksite, and most importantly, safety for everyone on the job.
That’s why the Southern District Training Trust Fund has provided the highest-quality rigging training for decades. We believe that investing in the best training possible is essential for the contractors and members we serve.
In addition to high-quality, hands-on instruction, SDTTF rigging training can be customized based on the needs of the contractor. We work with the Carpenters International Certification Council to ensure that the rigging program keeps pace with the needs of industry.Rigging training is conducted by our expert instructors and is backed by the National Commission for Certifying Agencies and the Carpenters International Certification Council.
Other certification options for rigging may not offer in-person instruction or the depth of information and experience available to participants in SDTTF courses. There is no additional cost for this training for members and signatory contractors. The cost is built into the dues structure of the organization.
Additionally, some contractors may see a reduction in insurance cost when employees complete this training and earn certification.
With the level of quality provided and the resulting increase in safety, the absolute value of this program can’t be matched.
Safety is paramount in rigging training and is a focus at every level of SDTTF courses. There is nothing more important than employees who understand how to maintain an injury-free worksite. Our goal is to prevent jobsite injuries, avoid work stoppages due to unsafe conditions, and eliminate higher project costs due to illnesses, accidents, deaths, worker disabilities, and workers’ compensation claims.
The rigging curriculum includes material on slings, hardware, cranes and signaling, and rigging application for a comprehensive approach to preparation for your employees. There are four levels of rigging training available through SDTTF:
- Familiarization
- Qualification
- Certification
- Master Rigger
We offer a 40-hour rigging familiarization course prior to testing for the qualification or certification levels. Participants receive and in-depth introduction to rigging principles before testing at their desired level.
The training includes three days of classroom instruction with hands-on activities, one day of practice with a crane and prop, and one day of applying what they have learned by moving and rigging the prop as instructed. This activity is proctored and graded, along with a practical and comprehensive test. The qualification test is administered at the conclusion of the course. The certification test may be completed any time within one year of the course.
The Master level test is for those that have completed certification and have significant experience as well as advanced mathematics.
